Abstract

Research shows that the combination of youth and inexperience leads to a high risk of road traffic accidents. Young people have an advantage over older people when it comes to acquiring driving skills; their psychophysical abilities are at a high level and they are likely to master the technique of driving faster than the elderly, as well as the necessary knowledge of traffic rules and regulations. The problem arises when assessing potentially risky traffic situations. Younger and inexperienced drivers notice fewer dangers in traffic, do so more slowly and underestimate the level of their danger. In contrast, experienced drivers anticipate more road hazards, spot them faster, and their risk assessment of such situations is more realistic and objective than that made by inexperienced drivers.
