Abstract

This paper aims to present simulation, as an alternative technique in Languages for Specific Purposes, as an answer to the complex requirements of 21st century education. A review of the theoretical and methodological foundations, the concept and structure of the simulation, is followed by a model for the implementation of the “Enterprise” simulation in an English for Business Purposes course at the tertiary level of education. The application of simulations in a task-based syllabus is justified with a view on the communicative and experiential approaches to teaching languages for specific purposes. In Languages for Professional Purposes, simulations represent a valuable integration of linguistic and subject matter competences and skills, acquired in the context of purposeful and meaningful interactions performed through the completion of pedagogical activities developed to replicate real-world professional tasks.
